Foster families: first-aid and CPR standards

Becoming a foster family in Nova Scotia means providing a safe, caring home to a child or youth in care. As part of getting approved, caregivers complete Standard First Aid with CPR (Level C), arranged through the provincial foster care system.

The first-aid requirement

In Nova Scotia, foster caregivers approved under the Children and Family Services Act complete Standard First Aid with CPR (Level C) from a recognized organization, arranged and funded through the provincial foster care system and the Department of Opportunities and Social Development. It builds the ability to respond to common emergencies — injuries, choking, cardiac arrest — for adults, children and infants.

The certificate is confirmed as part of your required caregiver training. It is one requirement in addition to the home study and the assessment of your suitability to foster, and must be renewed to stay current.

Severe allergies and anaphylaxis

Standard First Aid training includes recognizing and managing severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis), including the use of an epinephrine auto-injector.

How to meet it

A recognized, up-to-date first-aid and CPR certificate meets this requirement. It is in addition to the required training or assessment, and is renewed periodically.
